Not a lot of my friends knew that at one point of time, their parents were penalized for having more than 3 children. The 3rd child onwards are fined at least $1000? And the fine just keeps increasing with every consecutive kids you have. I am not sure of the amount of penalty you have to pay because obviously I was too young to even know this! But thanks to my mother who likes to share lots of stories from back in the day, I am informed that such rules existed at one point of Singapore's history.
My mum would complain how eons ago she gave birth to a baby boy only to be fined by the government for having more than 2 kids, and then when he turns 18, he has to bloody serve the National Service. Well, hypocrite isn't it? You fined families for having more than 2 children (which is so stupid because kids are a blessing from GOD! Obviously the people who made this decision back then prayed to the Mayan gods or something), then force these 'unwanted' babies to serve your bloody nation?
The country was overpopulated, and the only way they know at that time was to introduce such unpopular rules. I personally find the rule barbaric, but if there were a better population model back then, then probably they won't even think of that. They could have just let nature do its job. Because the more developed a country is, the more the distractions in life, and hence the lesser people will have time to make babies.
But again, isn't it ironic that today, they are bringing in more people from all over the world to top up the country to 6 million? When many years ago, they tried to curb a similar problem?
Crazy.
